Have Some Counting Fun

(answers on below )

Cooking with Children
(both of the recipes below need adult supervision)

Easy Chocolate Squares
225g plain/milk Chocolate
2 tbsp golden syrup
75g butter
100g shortbread finger biscuits
100g raisins or sultanas
 Grease a 32x20cm Swiss roll tin.
 Break chocolate into small pieces and put into a heat proof bowl. Add syrup and butter and set over a saucepan of barely simmering water. Stir until the chocolate is melted and the ingredients are blended. Remove bowl from pan. Careful this will be very hot.
 Put biscuits into a strong polythene bag and crush very coarsely with a rolling pin.
 Stir the crushed biscuits and raisins or sultanas into the melted chocolate until well coated.
 Spoon the mixture into the prepared tin gently spread level. Chill for 2-3 hours until set.

Cornflake Cakes

Follow the same method as above but replace the shortbread, raisins/sultanas with cornflakes and spoon the mixture into cup cake cases.

Both of these recipes are wonderful (if you’re a chocolate lover that is!)

Cooking for Adults

Thai Pumpkin Soup
Make the most of autumn’s harvest with this warming, seasonal soup
1½kg pumpkin or squash, peeled and roughly chopped
4 tsp sunflower oil 1 onion, sliced
1 tbsp grated ginger 1 lemongrass, bashed a little
3-4 tbsp Thai red curry paste 400ml can coconut milk
850ml vegetable stock Lime juice and sugar, for seasoning
1 red chilli sliced, to serve (optional)
Heat oven to 200C/180C fan/gas 6. Toss the pumpkin or squash in a roasting tin with half the oil and seasoning, roast for 30 mins until golden and tender.
Meanwhile, put the remaining oil in a pan with the onion, ginger and lemongrass. Gently cook for 8-10 mins until softened. Stir in the curry paste for 1 min, followed by the roasted pumpkin, all but 3 tbsp of the coconut milk and the stock. Bring to a simmer, cook for 5 mins, then fish out the lemongrass. Cool for a few mins, then whizz until smooth with a hand blender, or in a large blender in batches. Return to the pan to heat through, seasoning with salt, pepper, lime juice and sugar, if it needs it. Serve drizzled with the remaining coconut milk and scattered with chilli, if you like.
Recipe from Good Food Magazine October 2010
Easy Pumpkin Chutney
2.7kg pumpkins, peeled, deseeded and diced
3 oranges and 2 lemons
500g light muscovado sugar 600ml cider vinegar
Place the pumpkin in a bowl and sprinkle liberally with salt. Toss to get it all coated, cover and leave overnight. Drain off any juices, wash in cold water, then drain again to remove excess moisture.
Peel and segment the fruit and remove the pith. Tip into a heavy-based pot with all of the remaining ingredients. Bring to the boil over medium heat, then reduce the heat and leave to simmer uncovered, stirring occasionally, for about 40 mins. Cool, then transfer to a sterilised jar and seal.

Why go to a Toddler Group?
Whether you call them Play & Stay, Mother & Baby or just Toddler groups they all mean the same. They are generally run by volunteers and are for parent/carers of babies, toddlers and some groups to the age of 3. Most groups have a wide selection of toys for the children to play with and may also offer activities such as sticking and painting.

Toddler groups are great places for your child to learn how to socialise and share with other children and also for you to meet other parent/carers and have a chat. Some will offer drinks and biscuits to both parent/carers and children. It is a good idea, but not essential, before attending groups to telephone the leader to ensure the group is still running and they have places available. There is generally a small charge. It also helps children to settle into Pre-School and Nursery as they are accustomed to playing with other children.

At all toddler groups you have to stay with your child.

If you are concerned about going to a group on your own don’t worry a lot of parent/carers will be feeling the same and you can always sit and play with your child.

I took my children to several toddler groups when they were small and they loved it and so did I!

There is a list of Toddler Groups on the back page but there are many more around.
